Brief Description:  Completion of the Fifth Bearing Cover Installation

With the Loctite 680 cured overnight, the fifth bearing housing was carefully removed. The cover and engine case were given a final cleaning; and the Loctite anaerobic sealer was applied to the engine case. The bearing was given a good coating of the STP/Oil mixture. The housing was slid into position, the bolts with split lock washers were inserted, and the bolts tightened in 6 ft-lb. increments, in a crossing pattern, up to 18 ft-lbs. The crank was turned by hand between each torque step to confirm rotational freedom. Sealer squeeze-out was cleaned up, and the front I.D. of the housing was cleaned in preparation for installation of the oil seal.

White Lithium grease was applied to the I.D. of the oil seal. A thin plastic sheet was rolled into a cone shape and slid over the end of the fifth bearing. The oil seal was slipped over the cone and up against the face of the housing. A wood block and a light mallet were used to set the bearing into its seat on the front of the housing, then the plastic cone was pulled out. Excess Lithium grease was cleaned from the oil seal and housing, then the engine assembly was masked for painting.
