Brief Description:  Hybrid Studs & Fifth Bearing Housing

Cleaned and installed the six hybrid studs using Loctite 620 for retention.

The fifth bearing housing mount assembly was started by installing two dowel pin plugs in the engine case, using Loctite 680 for retention.

Masking tape was wrapped over the studs to protect the bearing in the housing. Four plastic shims, 0.001” thick were extended over the fifth bearing surface at four places and taped in position, to serve as spacers. The fifth bearing housing was slipped over the spacers, but it didn’t feel right. I removed the housing and found that one of the four shims was actually two shims stuck together. After removing the extra shim, the housing slid into position easily.

Two drill bushings loaned by SPA were bolted into position, the other mounting bolts added, then torqued to 17 ft-lbs. Two new dowel pin holes were drilled through the housing and into the previously installed dowel pin plugs, in two steps. The new holes were then reamed to size. Everything was disassembled deburred and cleaned up. A thin film of Loctite 380 was applied inside the dowel holes in the engine case.

The housing was reassembled, the bolts installed finger tight, and the new dowel pins were tapped into position. The assembly was left undisturbed overnight to allow the the Loctite 680 to cure.
