Brief Description:  Engine Assembly

With the case closed now, the engine was moved from the initial assembly holding fixture to an engine stand. This provides much better access to all sides, and frees up some bench space. A spacer was required under the four mounting points to clear the cam gear and the oil pump.

I spent some time today checking the piston ring gaps in one of the new cylinders. The ring is squeezed together and slid to about ¼” below the top of the cylinder, then the gap between the ends of the ring is measured with a feeler gage.

All of the compression rings for the top groove were within the specification of 0.013” to 0.025”. All of the compression rings for the middle groove had no clearance, with the same specification. All of the oil control rings for the third groove were within the specified 0.015” to 0.055” range.

This means that only the second oil control rings will need to be filed to meet the specifications.
