Brief Description:  Engine Assembly

Actual assembly of the engine started today. With the left half of the case sitting in a holding fixture, the crankshaft and camshaft bearings were coated with a mixture of ½ STP and ½ standard oil. The crank and camshaft were mounted in position and checked for freedom to rotate with only light resistance. The cam gear was checked for timing relative to the crankshaft, and after a confirming phone call to William Wynne, the decision was made to proceed with the assembly.

The cam lobes were lubricated with a thick film of Cam Lube, and three of the case corners were coated with Aviation FORM-A-Gasket on both halves to prevent oil leaks at these locations.

The right case half bearing surfaces were lubricated then the case halve was seated against the other half. The crank was turned by hand to check ease of rotation.

The eight case bolt threads were coated with Anti-Seize Lubricant to insure proper torquing results, and the underside of the bolt heads and nuts were coated with Aviation FORM-A-Gasket to prevent oil from leaking around the bolts. The bolts were inserted through the case, the nuts started, then they were torque up to 55 ft.-lbs. in 10 lb. increments. Between torquing steps, the case was firmly struck adjacent the bolts with a two pound bead blow hammer, to be sure the case halves were correctly seated, and the crankshaft was turned by hand to check for rotational freedom.

The paper gasket that goes between the crankcase and the rear oil case was coated on both sides with a double coat of Copper Spray-A Gasket, then the gasket was set in place on the crankcase. The oil slinger was mounted over the end of the crankshaft and the rear oil case was mounted to the crankcase. The threads of the seven bolts that attach the rear oil case were coated with Permatex Ultra Grey RTV Silicone, to prevent oil leaks around the bolts. All of the 5/16” bolts and 3/8” nuts were torqued to specifications.
