Brief Description:  Paint Prep

The Panther is finally ready for paint. It was a long tedious preparation process.
The first step was to disassemble the plane including: removal of the entire empennage, flaps, ailerons, wings, canopy, wheel pants, spinner, and cowling. The wing tips were removed from the wings so the wings could be supported on saw horses on both ends for painting.

The engine was also removed so the fuselage could be mounted on a rotisserie for painting, and to allow the oil case to be removed to fix a leak.

The second step is to thoroughly clean everything to remove any crud accumulated during the first fifty hours of flying.

The third step is to scrub all of the surfaces to be painted with Gray Scotch-Brite pads mounted on a Dual-Action sander. This removes the gloss from the aluminum, improving paint adhesion.

The fourth step is to thoroughly wash everything again with a foaming window cleaner to remove all the dust and debris generated by the Scotch-Brite.

The fifth step is to a wipe down with all the aluminum surfaces with Eastwood’s PRE Painting prep to remove any residual oils, wax, or other crud; and there was a lot.

The sixth step is a final wipe with Isopropyl alcohol to remove any remaining contaminants, and to reduce any static electricity that might attract dust

The final step immediately before applying paint is a light rubdown with a tack cloth.

Since I am an unmitigated amateur at painting, I am starting with some of the smaller pieces while I get accustomed to the gun and paint.
