Brief Description:  Elevator Joiners

This afternoon was spent assembling the elevator joiners to the elevators. The powder coating had been previously removed from the mating areas of the two joiner halves, and the faces that mate to the inboard elevator ribs had been reformed slightly to be parallel with the rib faces. With the two joiner halves assembled and taped in place, the ribs were match drilled to the joiners with a long #40 drill bit, and clecoed in place. The elevators were then removed from the stabilizer and separated at the overlapping tubes between them. On the bench, the holes were updrilled to #30, then everything was disassembled, deburred and cleaned up. The joiner halves were riveted to the ribs, then the ribs riveted to the elevators.

The Elevators were remounted to the horizontal stabilizer then flipped up-side-down on the bench for access to the elevator control horn. The two elevators were carefully aligned and clamped in position at the control horn.

Rather than cross drill in a single step, I decided to start with a #30 drill. To insure that the #30 hole was on center, I fabricated a drill bushing from a 3/16” bolt. The threads were removed then a #30 hole was drilled through the center of the bolt on my lathe. This drill bushing was slipped into the predrilled side of the control horn, after clearing out the powder coat, then through the MW-5 rod end, and up against the inside face of the opposite arm of the control horn. The #30 hole was drilled then the drill bushing was removed, the hole was updrilled with a #13 drill, then finished with a 0.1878 reamer. Everything was well aligned and the elevators moved freely.
