Brief Description:  Paint Material, Equipment, and Process

After doing some research about the types of paint that could be used on the Panther, I settled on a Single Stage, Acrylic Urethane. Single stage because I didn't want to add risk to the process by adding and additional round of shooting to apply the clear coat required by a Base-Coat/Clear-Coat system. An Acrylic Urethane system was chosen because it was reported by other aircraft builders to be one of the most accommodating systems for amateurs; and a catalyzed Urethane for its appearance, durability, and UV and chemical resistance.

After looking at several suppliers, I chose Eastwood paints and equipment. They provided a single source for everything I needed, and most important, they have a boat-load of on-line training videos related to the equipment and how to prepare for and apply their paint.

One of the features I particularly like about Eastwood's Single Stage Paint is that you can add up to 15% of their High Solids Clear-Coat into the mixed paint to elevate the gloss level without adding an additional spray application. The results will be an improved gloss, but not the depth of gloss achieved by a standard clear-coat.

I chose an Eastwood two gun set including a Concours Pro HVLP gun and a Detail gun, with several nozzle/needle/air cap sets. These guns are engineered specifically to work with smaller compressors. The Pro gun needs only 6.5 CFM at 30 psi, and comes with three nozzle/needle/air cap sets; 1.3, 1.7, and 2.0-mm. The Detail gun needs 3.0 CFM at 22 PSI, and comes with two nozzle/needle/air cap sets; 0.8 and 1.0-mm. These guns were chosen because they are high quality, and are within the capacity of my compressor.

The primer I chose is the Eastwood's Catalyzed Direct-to Metal Epoxy primer. This was chosen because it can be applied to aluminum without the need for alodyne or other pretreatment.
