Brief Description: Paint Scheme Planning
|
|
With Phase 1 testing completed in mid November, I began planning the various facets of painting the Panther. I have previously painted a plane, and while the results were passable, it could have been a lot better. There were several factors contributing to the mediocre results, including: an unnecessarily difficult to apply paint system, sub-optimum equipment, a less than ideal environment, and probably most significant – an inexperienced and poorly prepared painter.
The first task for this project was to develop the paint scheme. There were three objectives: 1. A scheme that was pleasing to my eye, 2. A design that would enhance the ultimate sale value of the plane, 3. A relatively simple design to accommodate my low experience level.
After looking at several thousand aircraft photos, I chose a design that my neighbor used on his F1 Rocket several years ago, as a starting point. I downloaded a copy of Inkscape to my computer. Inkscape is a free and open-source vector graphics editor. Inkscape's primary format is Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), however many other formats can be imported and exported.
I converted the Panther line drawing provided by SPA to a jpeg file and imported it into Inkscape. This scaled outline was used in an iterative process to work my way to the final paint scheme, shown below.
