Brief Description:  Flight Test #12 - Climb and Glide Rates

The climb and glide testing was completed on October 31, 2017. The test consisted of the following elements:
1. Seven climb and glide cycles between 2500 and 3500 feet with the flaps up at 65, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120 mph
2. Five climb and glide cycles between 2500 and 3500 feet with the flaps in the first notch at 65, 70, 80, 90, and 100 mph. (The flap speed is limited to 100 mph.)
3. Five climb and glide cycles between 2500 and 3500 feet with the flaps in the second notch at 65, 70, 80, 90, and 100 mph.
4. Five climb and glide cycles between 2500 and 3500 feet with the flaps in the third notch at 65, 70, 80, 90, and 100 mph.
It took about an hour and a half to complete twenty-two cycles. During each climb and glide, the airspeed was held as close as possible to the target speed.

The data was stored automatically in one-second increments on the EFIS system thumb drive, and carefully analyzed later. For each climb and descent, the data was examined to find a period of time where the airspeed was the most consistent around the target airspeed, within +/- 2 mph. The time stamps and altitudes for this period were used to calculate the climb or descent rate.

All the elements were flown within a five mile range of each other to minimize atmospheric anomalies. The data graphs show some waviness that I didn’t expect, so there may have been some vertical air movement that I wasn’t aware of.

According to this data, the best angle of climb (Vx) is 65 to 70 mph indicated. This will be used to get above the trees, then accelerate to about 110 mph, the best rate of climb (Vy) and better engine cooling.

The best glide rate is about 70 mph with the flaps up.
