Brief Description:  Second Flight Test

The second flight test of Panther # 039 was completed today. This time the air speed indicator worked correctly, removing some of the pucker factor. After a few turns to get the feel of the plane again, I reduced power to 2850 rpm, trimmed for level flight and started working my way down the flight test card.

The first item was to check for a heavy wing. The ball was centered with the rudder, and the stick released. The left wing dipped some, but was easily leveled with a light pressure on the stick. The flaps will be adjusted slightly to neutralize this.

Next, the wings were held level with the stick and the rudder pedals released. The ball moved off-center about one-third of a ball. I won’t make any adjustment for this until the heavy wing is eliminated and both items rechecked.
Next, the ball was centered with the rudder, the wings leveled with the control stick, then the ailerons were checked for displacement. There was no noticeable displacement.
After some more turns, the engine temperatures were recorded. The highest CHT was 363°, the highest EGTwas 1255°, and the oil temperature was 205°.

Next was clean stall testing. After applying carb heat, a one-G stall was slowly approached with the ball centered. It yielded a gentle, straight ahead stall with an immediate recovery when back pressure was released. This was repeated with the same results.

The next test item was a series of stalls at each of the flaps settings, but the flap detent pin did not adequately engage the flap detent plate, allowing the flaps to self-retract due to the air loads. So, this portion of the test card was abandoned for this flight.

While flying around getting more familiar with the plane I checked to see that the following items on the EFIS were operating properly: T.A.S. indicator, Wind Indicator, V.S.I., and the pitch reference vs. the V.S.I. The Manifold Pressure at 2850 rpm at 3000 feet was 21.4”, and the W.O.T. rpm was 3150.

Two approaches and one ugly landing was completed.
