Brief Description: Rebuilding Wing Access Panel Doublers
I originally drilled, dimpled, and mounted the nutplates to the access panel doublers last April. However, in the process I took a shortcut by not securing the nutplate through the first rivet hole while drilling the second hole. I thought that I had secured the nutplate enough with a screw through the center, but the nutplates on several of the holes moved enough that the #6 screws would not enter. Fortunately, I discovered this before mounting the doublers to the wing.
So, I ordered replacement doublers from SPA and started over. The nutplates were salvaged without difficulty from the earlier attempt. This time, with a shortened screw in the nutplate, and after drilling the first rivet hole, a cleco was inserted through the first rivet hole while the second hole was drilled. Because I had them on hand from a previous project, I used solid 3/32 rivets processed with a “back riveting” technique. Everything is correctly aligned and looks good this time.
