Brief Description:  Assembling Components to the Rear of the Crankshaf

While waiting for the remainder of my kit to arrive, I took the opportunity to complete the assembly of the modified Corvair crankshaft. The crank was modified by SPA to their Gen II configuration that includes a massive 5th bearing on the front end. The only work left to do is to assemble two woodruff keys, the eccentric, spacer, and distributer gear.

After the woodruff key pockets were cleaned, the keys were pressed in place, the eccentric slipped over the end of the crank, the spacer positioned against the eccentric, then the distributer gear is pressed into position. I had planned to use my 20-ton hydraulic press, but the lower support structure opening in the press was too small to accept the crank, so I decided to use the drill press.

After everything was correctly positioned and aligned in the drill press, the gear was heated with a hot air gun to about 200° F. It was set in position on the shaft and a steel tube positioned on top of the gear to clear the end of the shaft. An aluminum block was set on top of the tube to give the drill press chuck a flat surface to push against. It took very little force to push the gear firmly against the spacer. It turned out to be a simple and effective process.
