Brief Description:  Fibreglass

Did some more work on the fibreglass tips. Bonded the 020 Al strip to the other HS tip. Also countersunk and dimpled one of the elevators. The first photo shows the 020 aluminium strips I have bonded to the HS tip. I like this idea, since it gives the pop rivet a good bearing surface. However, I was suprised at how much weight it added. So I'm looking at washers for the other tips, but haven't yet found any with a 1/8" hole but a reasonably large outside diameter like 3/8" or 1/2"; getting some help from the guys on 'Vansairforce.net' though. I also noted from one of the elevators that it is difficult to consistently countersink the fibreglass and that there is very little material there. When I re-installed one of the tips the cleco wouldn't grip. So the washers or aluminium strip and definitely a good idea, if not specifically required. The second photo shows how I had to cut back the step on one of the elevator tips. I did this using a small grinding wheel in a dremel. It will require some filling once fitted to achieve a nice looking fit. I'm surprised at having to do this at all.
