Brief Description:  Canopy retaining blocks

Well, the weather turned bad today. Or rather, stayed bad from yesterday. Either way, no skydiving. So I got to spend a little time in the workshop. I made a start on the actual fitting of the left side canopy retaining block. Of course, though I had the main shape milled out from square bar for me, I still had to cut and shape the ends to allow the canopy to slide past and also determine a suitable position along the slide rail.

Here is what I came up with. As you can see in the pics I've positioned the block so it sits just underneath the aft part of the canopy frame where it starts to sweep up to the bulkhead. This will allow a pin to be welded onto the frame that will locate in a hole in the block (not yet drilled). The front of the block is just slightly forward of the tenth rivet in the side skin, counting forward from where the skins overlap at the F-807 bulkhead.

This position allowed me to pick up two existing rivets in the longeron to screw the block in place. Obviously I had to remove the rail, drill out the rivets, open to #19 for a #8 screw and then put the rail back. I backdrilled through the rail and through the retaining block, then countersunk the block for the screws.

Finally I had to file down the inboard edge slightly to allow the roller to roll cleanly over the top, and also file down the screw holding the roller on to allow it past the block. Overall, though, I think it has worked out ok. The gap under the block will be filled with a spacer or a liquid shim during final assembly. Right. Break for lunch, then start the right-side...
