Brief Description:  Vertical stab attachment

Today has been both a frustrating, productive *and* destructive day. Frustrating because of some confusion in the instructions causing delay, productive because I did actually get the vert stab attached, and destructive because I wrecked some pieces on the process and have had to order new ones. Read on...

It was going well. I had mrked and drilled the location hole in the vert stab aft spar, trimmed the forward spar and cleco'd/clamped the VS onto the fuse. I then aligned the VS laterally and marked and drilled #30 the three holes at the lower aft spar. This is where the confusion lay; the instructions say to final drill the holes to #12 but the plans call for an AN4 bolt which would require a 1/4" hole. Which is correct. After some extensive Googling and a post to VansAirforce I decided the plans were correct and drilled for AN4 bolts. I was pleased that I didn't get any edge-distance issues as many other builders have. I did actually email Vans as well, but have of course pre-empted their reply. Onwards then, and next job was to drill for the two AN3 bolts that go thorugh the rear spar and the F-812 angle. And here is where I made my first mistake. I don't know why, but I also drilled out the center hole which was the original locating hole. I have ths put an AN3 bolt in there. I don't think this will make much difference, but I can't find *anywhere* in the plans that calls out what actually goes in that hole! I guess I'll be blasting off another email to Vans.

With that done, I followed the instructions for aligning the VS with the fuselage and for aligning the hinge holes on the aft spar. That went ok, though I note that the bottom most hole is slightly out of alignment no matter how I jiggy the front of the VS. Not much I could do about that, and I know from past trial fitments that the rudder hangs and swings freely so I decided to make it as good as I could. With the alignment done, and the front of the VS clamped, I started drilling the attach plate /spacer / front spar. It was going well until I d
