Brief Description:  Grove landing gear

RV-8 fuselage. Here is the right-side Grove gear leg & brackets being drilled. First I matched drilled the leg to the U-804 bracket (the Grove replacement). Next I used bolts to align the U-806 bracket to drill through with the 7/16" drill. That's where things went wrong; while leaning into the work I lost my footing, slipped, side-loaded the drill bit and broke it. Luckily, the pieces are completely un-damaged (amazingly!). My left thumb, however, didn't fare quite so well, and I have a big gash nearly to the bone! Ouch!! :-( No more work for me tonight, then, and I need to go out tomorrow morning to buy *another* new 7/16" drill bit. I didn't even get all the way through, and MAN, whatever that U-806 is made of is *hard*. I went out later on and ran a couple of smaller drills through but when I hit 10.5mm (around 0.6mm undersize) it just heated up and wrecked the drill, even though I had plenty of lubricant in there; it went quick too. I guess I'll be needing one of those as well, but now that the metal is very likely work-hardened around the hole I'm not sure how I'll fare. We'll see; if I need to order a new U-806 then so be it, but I think it will be fine. I've got the left leg to do yet as well, not to mention additional holes in both of the wear plates once they're on the actual aircraft; *really* not looking forward to that and will need to be ultra slow and careful from here out...
