Brief Description:  Fuel tank SB 06-2-23, NACA vent

Another productive night, although with some concerns. I completed the rest of the service bulletin on the right fuel tank, which consisted on punching the weight fitting per the instructions and then assembling everything back onto the tank. The only snag was that I ran out of proseal whilst putting the access plate back on. I didn't get as much around the access hole as I would have liked, and I wasn't able to dip the screws at all. I'm hoping that since the screws had to push through a layer of proseal that they will have kind of sealed from the inside, but I'm just not sure. I'll leave the tank to set up over the weekend and then leak test it. Worst comes to worst I'll just remove it and do it again; I'll have to break open a new tube of proseal but if that's the cost of a good job then so be it. Anyway, once that was done I had the buidling bug for a while longer and made a start on fitting the NACA vent to the bottom inboard wing skin. First of all I made a backing strip of .025" aluminium which came out rather well I thought. I traced the NACA vent onto some sheet, then matched an outline on the inside ½" all round. I cut around the outside with snips and finished on the scotchbright wheel. I did the inside with a cutting disk in a dremel, followed by a sanding drum and then finished by hand. Then I match drilled the vent and backing strip to the wing skin. When I fit it, the skin will be dimpled, the vent countersunk, riveted and sandwiched with proseal. I haven't yet decided what I'm going to do about a mesh screen to stop bugs getting through the vent system.
