Brief Description:  Fitting the canopy

Well, it would seem that my fears about whether the Todd Canopy would fit the Tom Clark fastback were well founded. The 'good' news; I think there is a 'fix'.

Today I made another two cuts at the front of the canopy followed by a cut at the rear of the canopy. It was then that we noticed that the canopy is already sitting on top of the canopy frame at the rear, but down at the bottom it did not yet sufficiently overlap the side of the canopy frame. In short, the top of the frame is too high, or the canopy is not deep enough, whichever way you want to look at it.

To effect a 'fix', I've decided that the top of the frame is 'too high' and needs to come down by around half to three-quarters of an inch. To do this I will need to obtain some more tube, cut out the aft 'hoop', bend a new bit and re-weld it in. Obviously this isn't a five minute job because I have to order the material (and everyone is out for Christmas), then bend it, then cut and re-weld. Nonetheless, this will be quicker and significantly cheaper than ordering a new canopy [specifically for the fastback] from Airplane Plastics (Ohio), and then hoping that it does actually fit.

At this point, all further work on fitting the canopy is on hold pending the modifications to the canopy frame. At the same time I may as well finish of the retaining pins on each side and once the mod is complete send the frame out to be powder-coated. Damn. Ah well...
