Brief Description:  Gear tower mod

Access into the landing gear towers is really restrictive. A lot of builders modify the towers for better access and I didn't want to; I felt it would be better & stronger left as designed. After the last few days I've changed my mind, so tonight I decided to do the mod before going any further, because frankly it is hissing me right off...

First of all I checked the drawings, measured the existing cutouts, cose the screws and material I'd use and drew up a little sketch. It actually turned out slightly different in so far as there are 28 screws in each cover plate and not 22. I think when I used the rivet fan to mark the screws along the sides I must have got it one 'leg' out or something, so I've ended up with more than I anticipated. That and I calculated the length of the straoight edges at 9" when in fact it was over 11". No, I'm not sure how I managed that either; probably the whole radius/diamter thing. And to think, I was a grade 'A' maths student at school :-) Ahh, but that was in real metric numbers not these funny imperial things ;-)

Anyway, I got one cover plate made up and pre-drilled #40 and then went ahead and match drilled it to the left side gear tower. I had to be careful of the fuel vent tube which was inside the tower already. All good, and the next steps will be to match drill #19 for the #8 screws, then cut out the webs in between each lightening hole, and then drill and dimple or countersink for nutplates. Before that though, I'll use the existing cover as a template for the next one.
