Brief Description:  bending bows

It has been a busy summer. I had to lay off building for about 6 weeks. But I am back!!

1)After a bit of directi9on from the Sonex blog group on how to bend the bows without a slip ring roller maching, which I would not have minded so much if my shop were bigger, but I didnt have space to get one, and it would do nothiong to help pay for gas when I do fly. So the grateful fellows from all aover the world gave great directions on how to bent stuf manually. This pix shows the very simple bender they described.Very cheap and easy to make, and it can be used for other things after you are done with it! who could ask for any more?

2) I made a tracing (look very closely at the brown paper) from the plan specs. I used an bendable straight edge ruler from Hobby Lobby to produce smooth curves. I placed small brad nails along the spec radius and another at the radius plus the material diameter. This captured the bow the same way each time I reinserted it into the curve template after each little bump in theaforementioned homemade'bender' of image 1.

3) This shows the first section of the bend porcess. Each itteration of checking, bending , rechecking is a very repetitve process, each time just making a very small bend. I had to un-bend many times also. Pulling to the bottom of pix 3 at the RH end would put more curvature in. Pushing up to the top of the pix would un-bend just a bit. Repeat this many, many times until the boe fits the template as exactly as possible. Or, until you get tired! The windshield bow was tougher at it is a round rod, while the canopy bows are tubing.
