Brief Description:  First Flight

Well, today the winds were calm, there wasn't much snow left on the runway, so up, up and away. I took off from my 2000 foot strip (OK12). Takeoff was fairly uneventful. I smoothly added power, and after I picked a few mph asked the tail to come up. An initial takeoff neutral trim tab position meant a fair amount of stick forward force was needed to raise the tail. No directional instability on takeoff. The prop governor surged a bit on climbout since you can't cycle it well below 2100 RPM, but soon settled out. OAT was about 45 deg, climbout about 90 KIAS seemed reasonable in terms of the outside view. All temps in the green with the cowl flaps open. I climbed up to about 4500 feet, and just droned around in circles. Temps remained good, and I eventually closed the cowl flap. I ended up throttling back as 18 inches and 2700 RPM was delivering 140 KIAS. At that speed, the right wing is slightly heavy. After flying around for 20 or 25 minutes, I gradually pulled the power back while maintaining altitude, and had a slight buffet power-off at about 48 KIAS with two notches. There was no wing drop. Back to the field for a low approach/go around. Having been forewarned about the trim, it didn't seem overly sensitive. Basically, the amount of translation of the wheel is about the same as the amount needed to trim a Decathlon, with its linear mechanism. Anyway, go around without difficulty, 11 " MAP gives about 90 KIAS in the pattern, 7 " to descend. I ended up using 2 notches and 60 KIAS to approach, which gave me a good taildown attitude in the flare. The was some swing on the runout but I was able to control it without using the brakes. 0.39 hours hobbs. The only post-flight item was the left strut fairing rode up somewhere during the flight. Tomorrow's supposed to be good flying weather, too!
