Brief Description: Oil Pressure and Governor

As an initial trial, I added three AN960-4 washers to the oil pressure relief tower, the max allowed for the short, non-adjustable version. Not much effect. While trying to sort out the oil pressure, the propeller RPM control didn't work, at least at what I consider conventional RPM - for example, 1700 RPM. Talking to Bob, we began to wonder if the low oil pressure and the governor were related. Accordingly, I fabricated a block-off plate, and tried running up again without the governor in the system. That change improved the idle oil pressure to 30 psi, but did nothing for the pressure at 2000 RPM. I then installed an 11 lb P/N LW11713 spring in lieu of the 6 lb P/N 77467 and now had 50 lbs of oil pressure at idle and 68 psi at 2000 RPM. I then spent some time talking to Hartzell relating no RPM change with the lightweight S-1-15 governor I had installed. They suggested a rag in the crankshaft galley or improper rigging. I checked the former by pressurizing the front port of the governor mount, which clearly easily moved the pitch of the prop. The rigging was easily visibly correct from the cockpit with the cowl off. They then suggested sending the governor in for IRAN. I called Mr. Goldberg and asked if he'd had any trouble with this particular governor. He said he didn't recall any, but put me in touch with his mechanic who'd installed one. JB said with the S-1-15 governor, you needed 2100 RPM to get any decrease in RPM by pulling the prop control back. JB had talked to Lycoming to figure that out. It's a shame Hartzell wouldn't tell that info. Hmmm. Anyway, I reinstalled the governor, maintained 50 psi at idle and achieved 73 psi at 2000 RPM and at 2100 RPM, achieved prop cycle by pulling the control aft. Mission accomplished.
