Brief Description:  Mounting Brake Calipers

Today I mounted the Cleveland 199-62 Two Puck Brake Caliper Mounts. Only three of the stock mount holes can be used; there is too much interference from the welded tubes to mount the upper right bolt. On the stock mount, two small bushings are used to convert the 3/8 in holes so as to fit a 5/16 in bolt. The one upper stock hole which is useable utilizes a -5 bolt and that bushing. In order to get 4 mounting bolts, I drilled another additional 5/16 in hole more toward the three o'clock position. To aid in centering the mount, I put a few wraps of metallic itape on the stock spacer so as to take up any play, and clamped the mount to the gear leg with a vise grip. I found a 3/8 " OD 1/4 in ID bushing to be ideal in order to center the transfer punch. Also, using 12 in long "aircraft" drills seems to be necessary to clear the axle. I bent a 3/8 in wrench to aid in tightening the -5 nuts (see image 2). Finally, MS21042-5 nuts are lower profile than AN363 nuts, which really help in getting a nut on the top -5 bolts. I also drilled the cotter pin holes in the axles and set everything aside, waiting for tires and tubes. I had to weld up a small nick in the steel tube on account of a drill pulling through the hole I was drilling, scratching the tube, also necessitating priming and painting. The 8.50 x 6 tubes are on backorder, because the factory making them is out of business, according to Desser.
