Brief Description:  Checking Toe In

I'd thought that assessing toe-in was something that the scratch builder's would need to worry about, and that Avipro would have already checked it. I called Mark, and he told me that I should check as a few aircraft with nearby serial numbers had had problems with the toe-in. I check my toe-in, and as my luck would have it, my toe-in was excessive, about 2.25 inches as measured 40 inches in front of the brake disc. The desired amount of toe-in was .7 inches total per BearTracks 5-2. I contacted Bob Barrows, and he suggested checking how much the tread varied in 20 feet of travel. He suggested that 1 inch or less variation in tread within that travel would be desired. My change in tread was 2 inches. I then set about "adjusting the toe-in". That involves jacking up the wheel to be adjusted, removing the tire and wheel sleeve, setting the gear down on a block, applying heat to the aft part of the axle adjacent to the brake ring, and applying force with an 8 foot pipe, advertised as 50 lbs. Unfortunately, I'd previously installed the axle reinforcement, and the most I was able to achieve was .25 inches correction. Even more unfortunately, as I was setting the right gear down on the blocks for one more try, the left shock strut compressed, shifting the fuselage towards the left, tilting the blocks over with the gear falling off the jack. This had the effect of tossing the aft gear fairing onto the blocks, seriously bending it (and that's the polite version).
