Brief Description:  Avionics Communication

I spent an enormous amount of time getting the AFS EFIS's to talk to the Garmin GNS-480. Kelley Babin had originally wired the harness, but unfortunately, AFS hadn't finalized the connections to a 480 at that time. As a result, it was necessary to change some of the wiring around. After doing that, the EFIS wouldn't still wouldn't talk to the 480 via ARINC, although it was receiving serial port data. AFS sent another ARINC unit, which still didn't work. I ended up sending the EFIS's back to AFS for their expensive synthetic vision, CPU and monitor upgrade. They told me that my units as received showed that although the ARINC function worked on their computer, it wouldn't work with their 480. The upgrade replaced all those boards and they tested it on their 480 before sending the units back to me. In the meantime, I sent the 480 off to Garmin, who said they would check it and if it was ok, they'd send it back without charging more than freight. Well, they didn't say that if it had any outstanding service bulletins, they would need to do those, all for the a whopping $800. I got everything back, went through all the configuration options, and figured out a way to do all the hookups. Then the GTX-327 transponder, which was a refurbished unit, stopped turning on. It had been acting like the avionics master wire was hooked up, but in fact it was not. I sent the unit to Kelley, who found it tested fine. I then hooked up the avionics master lead, and the transponder now works correctly. I also spent some time getting the appropriate GPS signals sent to the transponder, ELT and a pair of accessory GPS ports, configuring the 480 and EFIS's so that they would send the appropriate format. All this required taking apart a lot of the harness, and then putting it back together.
