Brief Description:  Tailwheel Rudder Springs

After reports of the rudder arm cracking when "compression" type springs are used, I switched my Maule compression springs to the "tension" type. Budd Davidson suggested using springs of the type used on the Scott 3200 tailwheel. These are the Scott 3200 tailwheel springs sold by Wicks, P/N TWS-3239. A pretty good summary of the Scott tailwheel springs plus some negatives on the compression-type springs is found at http://www.cessna120-140.org/forum/files/tailwheel_steering_springs.pdf. These particular springs are supposed to be set with no tension, as tension is "neither needed or desireable", according to the instructions that came with the springs. Unfortunately, there is very slight slack in the springs with the current amount of chain links, and one each less from each side will put tension on the springs. Hopefully, the current configuration is tight enough.
