Brief Description:  Cylinder AD 2

I flew down to New Braunfels and exchanged my Mandatory Service Bulletin afflicted ECI cylinders for new ones. It turns out that the pushrod shroud springs are not provided on new cylinders, whereas the the 45 deg -6 oil drain fittings are. Go figure. Also, rocker arms are not included, but the rocker arm shaft is. After carefully installing the new cylinders and torquing them twice (two people are needed to install the cylinders, one to guide them in place, and the other to grunt and push), it's necessary to check the dry tappet clearance. To do that, the lifter is removed in two steps, the outer cup being removed with needle nose pliers, and the inner assembly is removed with a piece of bent safety wire. Next a short rod of hinge pin was used to press against the ball and with a counterclockwise twist being applied, the spring assembly is removed. The inside of the lifter is dried, and the spring assembly is reinstalled in reverse fashion. 50% 50 weight and STP was brushed on all moving parts. Next, top dead center is found by rotating the prop, achieving compression and using a small piece of welding rod placed in the spark plug hole. The rocker arms are installed by shifting the shaft to one side using a bent piece of rod, after which the shaft is advanced into the rocker arm. A .028 - .080 inch go-no go guage is used to check clearance. A bunch of mine were too tight. All the pushrod part numbers were recorded which were too tight, and these were swapped with others with lower numbers that were too tight, until finally I ended up needed three each 73434's, which are the shortest rods. Those were bought and installed, pushrod shrouds springs were installed as well as all the miscellaneous fittings, lines, and pipes and new REAL silicone valve cover gaskets. Friday the 13th raised its head when a pushroud shroud spring stud broke, even using a torque wrench. That required a hour of carefully drilling out the broken stud, retapping, and reinstalling a bolt in place of the stud.
