Brief Description:  Service Struts

Somewhere along the line, I'd gotten the impression that by tightening the lock nut on the strut threads would stop them from leaking. Not so. After every less than smooth landing, ATF fluid ended up on the belly. To put fluid in and put thread sealant on the threads, I needed to lift the wheel completely off the ground. After talking to Mark, he confirmed that you can lift one side using a tow strap. I'd tried to do it before, but with the tailwheel in the normal position, the aircraft was unstable when trying to lift it. I hit upon the idea of turning the tailwheel around, which is a more stable configuration, and placed the engine cherry picker so that it straddled the main landing gear tire. All this configuration allowed me to raise the tire enough to disconnect the strut, fill the housing with ATF fluid and put thread sealant on the strut threads. After two flights, no more ATF on the belly!
