Brief Description:  Panel Design

I plan to install a simple VFR panel. I want an airspeed indicator, altimeter, VSI and ball/slip indicator. I’ve rejected the idea of using one of the glass panel systems. They are very nice and provide lots of information but I just don’t think it is worth the complexity and expense for the type of flying I’ll be doing with this airplane.

I’m looking at the MGL digital airspeed indicator and combination altimeter /VSI. I’ve never been a fan of digital instruments but I think I could get used to them. If I decide to go with conventional flight instruments I may try the smaller 2 ¼ inch size. I’m not sure how I could read them in flight. I know someone that is installing those smaller flight instruments in his Highlander panel so I hope I’ll get a chance to see his before I have to make the decision.

I’ll use my Garmin 495 mounted in the panel with an Airgizmo mount and an MGL com radio /intercom. No transponder since I don’t normally fly in radar environment.

Assuming I use the Viking engine I’ll use the Grand Rapids engine monitor .

I plan to use fuses rather than circuit breakers. Fuses are lighter, cheaper and more reliable than circuit breakers. I don’t reset
circuit breakers in flight anymore and I won’t be replacing fuses in flight either. I bought a fuse panel that will mount flush on
the instrument pane with all the wires on the back. I’ll use conventional toggle switches for all the accessory electrical circuits.
