Brief Description:  Marked Z-Brackets

Finally, I'm working on the tanks! Progress at last. This time I am researching each and every part on Van's Airforce website. I've made too many mistakes by not checking with others first. Having moved my build to Ohio, I currently don't know anyone who has done a slow-build wing before.

In keeping with this approach, the first step in the fuel tank procedure is to measure and drill the Z-Brackets which hold the fuel tank off from the spar and make it part of the leading edge of the wing. The noted expert in this area, Dan Checkoway, who is cited more than anyone I've come across on the boards, passed along a method to drill and locate the Z-Brackets such that you still have access with a socket to tighten the AN3-4 bolts/nuts, and that supposedly lines things up perfectly with the leading edge. Step one of the Checkoway method is to measure and drill the inboard brackets (2) using one dimension, and then drill the inboard brackets with another.

For the inboard bracket, I measure 1/4" from the edge of the flange. Drawing a line the length of the bracket, I then found the exaxt center of this line and drilled a #12 hole. Bye the way, I treated all the edges with the Scotch-Brite wheel first.

For the 12 outboard brackets, I measured 5/16" from the edge of the flange. I'd like to cite all of my references, but after reading at least five accounts on how to do this it would be difficult. Just search for "Checkoway" on the VAF site. Anyway, same procedure, draw a line down the middle and drill a #12 hole at the center-point.

Hopefully I can head to the shop this evening and drill the holes and mount at least the inboard two brackets.
