Brief Description:  Electric Trim Mounting

Spent all day at the hangar, but don't have much to show in the way of progress.

Started the day off right by flying to Leesburg w/Jeremy. Was his first flight into the Washington DC SFRA. Very challenging in the way of thinking ahead and doing the homework prior to the flight. Coming into Front Royal, was greeted by Unicom "Winds gusting to 30 knots out of the West, advise Runway 28". Hmmmph! Ended up flying a long straight in approach to get a feel for conditions prior to touchdown. Success....good landing and we got the plane down and to the hangar without a problem. The mountains to the West really churn things up so it was definitely an E-Ticket ride the whole way.

Once back, I decided to work on the Trim Plate some more. I primed the parts and riveted the mounting brackets to the plate. Then I primed again with Zinc Chromate. Have started using that for the small jobs internal to the airframe.

I also un-cleco'd the skin and decided to back-rivet the final two nut-plates in. This was somewhat challenging, but I did manage to do that with only one bad rivet. Had to drill it out and re-set a new one. No problem.

Upon testing the fit of the mounting plate, I realized the skin would have to be dimpled to accept the mounting plate. I had dimpled the screw-holes in the mounting plate earlier yesterday with a #6 dimple die. Naturally the plate would not sit flush on the skin without some room under the dimple. Hmmm, how to dimple a skin with the nut-plates riveted in???? Finally decided to just torque the screw in tight to form its own dimple as it went it. Seemed to work quite well, but still the dimple was somewhat shallow and did not accept the mounting plate flush. I then discovered that I could put just the male dimple-die into the DRDT-2 dimpler and the nut plate fit snuggly into the female receptacle of the dimpling machine. Hard to describe, but the bottom line is that I was able to deepen the dimple enough to accomodate the mounting plate. Done!

That's pretty much wher
