Brief Description: ELT Installation - Part 4.
|
|
I finished the installation of the ELT by fabricating a bracket to mount the antennae and crimped on a Co-Ax connector to the end of the RG-58 antennae cable. I really don't like the location of the antennae but after all the research I have done I think this is the best compromise for an RV-8. I rolled the fuselage outside and tested the ELT for proper tone and light sequences as per the instructions. To test the GPS to ELT feature I connected my laptop running Hyper Terminal to the data serial test line and ground line and confirmed the proper data sentences.
Taken from some clever fellow on the VAF Forums:
Your GPS should be sending a similar serial data stream (among others) to the ELT: (Example)
$GPGGA,161907,3321.67,N,08434.25,W,1,00,3.2,221.7,M,-30.7,M,,*78
The $GPGGA tells the ACK ELT that this is a VALID latitude/longitude. The next values are time, latitude, N/S, Longitude, E/W and the remaining data is ignored by the ELT (but is used by other devises such as the Dynon Autopilot).
The $GPGGA string must be present or the ELT will ignore the data stream.
