Brief Description:  VS

After much soul searching, I decided to replace one of the rivets that hold the bottom ribs to the front spar. My wife bucked this rivet for me, and it didn't look right. I think it clinched. So I drilled it out and replaced it. Looks much better. I used the squeezer on it. Then I tackled the top rib. Yesterday we bucked those rivets because they were awkward to get at with the squeezer. We put the shop heads out because it was easier to buck them that way. One rivet looked good, the other not so much. But it had been a long day and I decided to sleep on it. Today I decided that by changing the way I clamped the assembly, I could use the squeezer after all. So I drilled out the rivets. The rib web and the spar tab had some deformitiy from the previous bucking operation, so I smoothed those out the best I could, and squeezed a coup[le rivets in there. This time the manufactured heads were outboard. One rivet looked good, the other was clinched rather horribly. So I drilled it out and tried again with the squeezer. Clinched even worse. Drilled it out and used the gun and bar. Set the rivet with about 5 short bursts, checking for clinching in between bursts. Finally, an acceptable set! Yea! Took the rear spar and the skeleton to the airport for Joe Williams, the local AI mechanic, to look at. He gave me the thumbs up to put the skin on.
