Brief Description:

Another couple of frustrating days. Started yesterday by finishing up the sanding on the inside of the fuselage. Next, I placed the VS and the upper fuselage in position. This is because I need to fabricate the vertical component of the hatrack. That component acts as a partial bulkhead, and attaches to the upper fuselage at about station FS195. I want to get it completed before closing off the vertical stabilizer.

So I consulted the "manual" for the VS and fuselage pre-fit. First section in Chapter 13 states that there are scribe lines on both the VS and the upper fuselage to assist in trimming to fit the joggles. That sounds helpful. But no such luck. No scribe lines anywhere. In the front, the critical areas are the cowling joggle and the door joggle, as well as the fit of the firewall to the fuselage. Those are not much of a problem to get aligned horizontally. But the supposed scribe lines would help for the vertical fit. There absence would not be much of a problem, but for the vertical stabililzer. Not only is there a joint between the VS and the upper fuselage that need to fit well, but then there is the rudder. The vertical location of the VS determines the distance between the top of the VS and the bottom of the fuselage, which distance needs to match the length of the rudder. In short, there are lots of inter-related parts here that need to be just so, and the first aid to that is missing, the scribe lines. I may have to switch gears and jump to the rudder construction just to get the vertical position of the VS and fuselage. Sometimes I wonder.
