Started the day sanding the micro from yesterday on the upper elevator skins. The trailing edge treatment worked just great, so when I finished sanding I've got nice flat elevators, with enough micro on the trailing edges to form a nice edge, and a little extra to help equalize the elevator chords.
After sanding the upper skins, I flipped the assembly over and microed the lower skins. This time, rather than apply micro in two steps, I applied it in one step, putting enough down to fill the whole area necessary. Also, rather than apply with a plastic spreader, I decided to use a 12 inch drywall knife, large enough in most places to bridge the space between the leading and trailing edges. On the lower skins, there is a bit of concavity, so this method works great to help achieve a flat surface without having to use or remove too much micro. That being said, it did take a lot of micro to cover the lower skins. I know that a lot of this micro will end up being sanded off, but some will remain on the elevators, and I'm a bit concerned about weight. But for now I would be more concerned with a concave elevator surface. The concavity is mostly about 1/16 inch, but in a couple of places approaches 1/8 inch.
