Brief Description:  First blood

This morning I reinforced the spar and rib additions from yesterday. After about 8 hours they were ready to sand, so I started final fitting of the left elevator upper skin. Lots of fit and sand action. I learned that to fit, the ribs really need ultimately to be in two pieces, for the core materials actually meet at their aft limits. It's just as well to make the ribs from one piece, though, for bonding and reinforcing is much easier than if they were in two pieces. I finally got the skins to meet well at the trailing edge on a flat surface.

Next I trimmed the upper skin at the leading edge, to make sure that there would be no overlap of the joggle. That's where the blood comes in. I let my thumb overhang the sanding block just enough to learn exactly how sharp the carbon fiber is. A nasty slice into the meaty part of my thumb. I hope that carbon fiber is mostly sterile, for without passing out there was no way to get it all rinsed out.
