Brief Description:  Inboard elevator ribs and trailing edge

I finally decided today that I had to establish the location of the trailing edge of the elevator. My only reliable measurement is that contained in the cradle drawings, which give an inch measurement at each building line location. The measurement is the chord line of the combined hstab and elevator. So using those measurements, I marked the appropriate distance on the lower elevator skin, measuring from the leading edge of the hstab, at the center and outerrmost building lines. Then I drew a line connecting those marks, and checked the middle building line measurements. They were very close, so I feel pretty good.

Next, it was time to build the inboard elevator ribs. These are made from 6bid layups, angled at 30 degrees. What the manual doesn't say is that these ribs cross the lower and upper skin reinforcing honeycomb. I decided to remove the corner of the honeycomb at its intersection with the rib, and fill the end void with micro. If you look at the pictures, it shows that the amount of honeycomb removed differs from one side to the other. That's just the way it is. The manual provides for precise measurements for the placement of the ribs, so I figured that if I built the ribs to that measurement, any difference lies in the placement of the honeycomb on the skin. In any event, that's the way it turned out.

The next question was how far aft to run the rib. (And the remaining ribs.) After much thought, I decided to run the rib all the way to the trailing edge. The plans call for the trailing edge to be approximately 1/8 inch. If you don't run the rib to the trailing edge, then the distance between the end of the rib and the trailing edge is unsupported, and will result in either a concave surface for that distance or a gap between the rib and the skin. The only way to prevent that is to taper the rib to the trailing edge.

I'm still in contact with Lancair over these issues, so I'll give them a bit more time to respond before I take the plunge and trim the trailing edges. I'm c
