Brief Description:  First epoxy

Spent a couple of hours today trying to fabricate elevator spars that would fit. Complicating things is that they are not symetrical. The top elevator skin has honeycomb reinforcement that is wider than the lower skin. I did get BL 20 rib pretty close, but I'm still not 100 percent satisfied. Hopefully my inquiry to Lancair yesterday will yield some templates that make sense.

Returning to fabrication, though, I cut out for the elevator spar hinge mounting reinforcements. Cutting out was no problem. After that was done, I needed to micro the fillets. This meant filling up the ratio pump with resin and hardner. Before starting the project, I had to completely rebuild the ratio pump, which was in poor shape. Fortunately the manufacturer is still in business, and had a rebuild kit. The ratio on the pump as I got it was wrong, so I had to fabricate a new pump arm, and had to move the location of the pumps to achieve the 4:1 by volume ratio. Today was the first test of the pump. After priming, Cathy helped me catch several samples of resin and hardner, which we weighed. The weight to volume ratio varied between 19:100 to 23:100 which is right on the 22:100 specs.

I mixed all the lots together, and it did cook off pretty well, so I mixed up a new batch, and added micro to form the fillets. I didn't want to lay up the e-glas yet, because this was my first for real epoxy, so I'll wait to see if everything cures properly before proceeding.
