Brief Description:  Elevator skin fitting, continued

This morning before work I popped off the left elevator upper skin. The result of the last few days paid off, for the skin to spar surface is now essentially flat along the entire spar surface. That will make the capstrip construction coming up much better. After work, I refitted the right upper skin to the lower using micro, and expect the same results as with the left elevator.

Also today, I trimmed up the squeeze out of micro from the left elevator spar, as illustrated in images 1 and 2 below. I also trimmed up the aft portions of the ribs where I had placed the micro flox mixture. The purpose of this is to provide a stable glue surface for the intersection of the upper skin and the ribs. Because the height of this portion of the ribs is so small, it would be impossible to reinforce a 2 bid capstrip with additional 2 bid layup as suggested by the manual. Image 3 below shows a profile view of the two outboard ribs, enlarged with the micro flox mix. I know that this does add some weight, but not very much.

I also began laying out the elevator trim on the left elevator. This process at this point requires cutting out the servo access panel. Reading ahead in the manual, it requires that after closing the elevator, and then cutting out the trim tab, you have to add small spars to the aft elevator, and forward part of the trim tab. But why not do this now, when I can have full access to the lower elevator skin? I'll have to work out the sequence and layout carefully, but this seems like the time to add these extra spars.
