Brief Description:

I've been working every day, but not logging so much. Waiting on a lost cable nut to complete the parking brake, so have had to turn to other items. During the last week I placed nutplates on the hatrack flange. made brackets to lower the aileron cross-over tube, and spent a lot of time doing the final fitting on the flap torque tube. For that I enlisted the help of my friend Bill Hayllar, who has a Bridgeport mill and a generous heart. The kit I have is an early version, so the flap tubes each had a flange welded on each end. The would have required a slotted mount on the outer wing fairing rib, not really what I wanted. Later versions had tubes without flanges and a center flange. So I got the later center flange from Lancair and cut off the welded flanges on the existing tubes. That enables placing and replacing the tubes easily, but caused more issues. First was that it created the need for a drilled hole in the tube a bit too close to its end for my taste. Next it created a lot of slop when mounting the inboard bearing blocks. My solution was to get a stout piece of aluminum tubing that fit perfectly inside the tubes, to act a both an alignment aid and reinforcement for the attachment of the tubes to the center pivot arm. Bill helped getting the four holes required drilled perfectly. Then, I put the tubes in place, using the outboard bearing blocks, and bolted them to the center pivot arm reinforced with the aluminum tube. That put the entire flab torque tube in proper alignment, Then I placed the inner bearing blocks on the torque tubes, and eventually set them in place on the inner seat support with a flox release. That, plus a gasket paper shim on each bearing block yielded accpetably low friction to rotation.
