Brief Description:

Today I applied the Rhino 9700 sealer to the lower wing skin. This task began by laying Gorilla duct tape, adhesive side up, along the spar and capstrips, about 1/16 inch or so away from the edges. The manual suggests another method, but I think this method works just fine. So I carefully placed the duct tape in the proper places, and held the pieces down with small pieces of blue painter's tape. Then my wife and I carefully lowered the lower skin down into place, then weighed it down, to make the bond. When we lifted the skin, the duct tape was bonded as expected, and the process worked great.

Next, I carefully traced the edges of the duct tape with pencil, thereby leaving the margins of the sealer marked. I did this because I didn't want that super-aggressive duct tape adhesive to stay in place any longer than necessary. After that, I applied much more friendly blue painter's tape to the pencil lines.

Finally, i embarked on placing the Rhino 9700 sealer. Not nearly as difficult to work with as Hysol, but still not easy. I started out with a brush, but finally settled on plastic bondo spreaders. It did take two coats, two hours apart, because there were some problems with adherence of the first coat. It developed what appeared to be fish-eyes. Not really sure of the proper term. But the second coat worked well, and the final product seems fine.
