Brief Description:  Primed Elevator Parts

Late start today, errands in town. I spent the day scuffing up each part with Scotchbrite pads, cleaned with Alcohol, then primed. Image 1 shows a homemade scotchbrite wheel on my drill -- was handy for getting in the inside corners of the ribs. I cut ups some scotchbrite pads and used an arbor I had, then just held it on the bench as a stationary tool, and took the work to the drill. I used SEM self-etching primer in my new paint booth. It was very easy to use and provided excellent coverage. That said, so far I've used approximately 20 oz and still have a few small parts to paint, as well as the interior of the skin. I estimate I will use at least 2.5 lb of primer on the inside of the elevator. Total that up across the airplane, and it will likely add up to 50 lbs extra weight. The SEM primer is also expensive, approx $12 per can. When it's gone, I'll try the Rustoleum self-etching primer from WalMart, it costs quite a bit less.
