Brief Description:  outboard leading edge modification PM

3:30pm

So this afternon I worked off the ER fuel tank plans and used the template to match drill holes for the splice rib. This splice rib will attach to the splice strips and the other half will get nutplates and attatch to ER tanks.

The template also has to be measured for parallelism. I measured from the edge of the template to the center of the first row of rib holes. You measure aft by the spar and forward near the leading edge. This is done on both top and bottom to make sure the template is straight and parallel.

Then I started match drilling as you see in the first 2 pictures. I began towards the spar and worked forward. I clecoed as I went. Same process for the bottom.

Once all holes are drilled #40 and clecoed I used a box cutter and scribed a heavy line on the INBOARD SIDE (inboard of the cleco line) of the edge of template. This will be the cut line for these 1001 skins. This will fully complete modification in preperation for the larger ER fuel tanks to be installed.

I then used tin snips to carefully cut on the scribe line to trim off the extra material. Taking your time is a critical part because this has to be straight for proper alignment next to fuel tanks. I was very happy with the results. After cutting with tin snips, I used a pneumatic cut off tool with a small sanding disk to fine tune the "lines" Any rough edges were deburred with a scotch brite pad.

After looking at the final edge, its pretty hard to tell which edge is a factory edge and what was human hand cut:-) I guess that is a good thing!!
