Brief Description:  Some quiet testing

These UL Power engines have a history of cylinder wall scuffing due to piston slap that comes from poorly manufactured pistons. With all the oils in the world to choose from, I've been looking for an oil that is suitable for flat tappet engines and is known for it's protection from piston slap. In all of my research I found that Chevron's Delo 400LE provides 1350ppm Zinc content, and has raving reviews from heavy duty engine operators who swear by it. Knowing that I may very well be updrading to forged pistons by Weisco, I decided to go ahead and try it and the results are puzzling. The first thing I noticed on a fresh oil change with the Delo was that my acceleration from climb to cruise was much better. The engine spooled up quicker than usual which had me at 200kts in no time. Furthermore, the piston slap was noticeably reduced which coincides with the research I've done. Keeping in mind this is NOT an oil that should be used with 100LL, but these engines hate LL anyways. The other thing that happened instantly, was a complete hault to any blow-by I was getting, even with the new rings on Cylinder #5. With no blow-by my oil temps were also noticeably lower than usual. I'm liking this :) My only concern is that after shut down, the engine feels tighter than usual. Nothing alarming, but worth a compression check here down the road. For now, I'll put another few hours on her and then borescope, and check compression before making any decisions to continue using it. What's got me really smiling is that it only costs $20 an oil change with this stuff :)

Stay tuned
