Brief Description:  Pipes and all my crazy ideas

The all new exhaust system is, again, bone simple, but now also something I've never seen before. When shaping the cowling for low drag, the cowl will almost always take on its own shape. Wrap the engine as tight as you can, leaving room for vibration and heat where needed. Apart from that, smooth lines, contours, and no abrupt directional changes all lead to a very low drag cowling shape. The major issue I've had to consider were problems relating to the original exhaust system I made. It was as low profile as possible, with equal length pipes, and all ending just inside the cowl. However, it was very difficult to install and maintain. The brackets to keep them together had to be custom made and where the pipes were located made it very difficult to maintain the rocker tappets. Add to that, the heat they produced caused the wingroot foam to expand which will now need to be dug out and re-glassed. This led to the need for huge heat shields and so on and so on. So then....I decided to change the layout to rid of these issues all together. The solution is, well, simple :) 6 shorties not attached and piped right out the bottom of the cowling...well almost :) So here's the plan. Cylinders #1 and #2 will be terminated inside the cowling to pump air out of the cowling which is a major advantage when sitting on the ramp in the heat. The other 4 pipes will exit just below the cowling line. NOW, there is notable drag increase with that setup and I'm not ignorant to that. To reduce this, a bend will need to be made outside the cowling that keeps the exhaust aimed backwards, however there may be another solution in cowling design that may aid in straightening out the exhaust blasts. Not there yet, but should be a fun task :) She is becoming more Formula 1 by the day :)
