Brief Description:  A lot learned and nothing to show for it

I arrived at the airport REALLY pumped up to try out this balsa wood cowling idea. Within the first Hour I had 3 sheets superglued together and making the smoothest transition from fuselage to oil cooler that I could imagine. SWEET! I then moved over to the wing and bonded 4 more sheets together, hot glued them to the fuse and wing and then hit a brick wall. Technically speaking, in order to create a CAD like curved surface using 2 dimensional sheets requires that each sheet is cut to an EXACT shape. Something that a computer would have to do in order to complete this task. See, taking small curves is no problem, works GREAT, but making large curves is almost impossible using 3" rectangle sheets. I struggled with it for about 2 hours and finally realized that this idea just wasn't going to cut it. I "may" have gotten it, had it been on TOP, making it a trillion times easier to superglue the sheets, but that's just not the case. gravity is against me on this one. Plan B was to find a better way to bond and found that the hot glue gun was the real ticket. I was advised several weeks ago to order a box of narrow thin stips of yellow foam that a very experienced builder had used in the past. I didn't. HOWEVER, before I closed up shop I made a few thin strips from Blue foam and started again. This time I was able to make smaller strips and take tighter turns. However, I didn't take the time to measure the centerline very well, so off it came! At this point I'm exhausted and decided that today was a practice round. I cleaned up, and set up everything for tomorrow to go smoothly using blue foam. One thing I did accomplish was trimming the template for the bottom cowl. It's gonna look MEAN! Round 2, tomorrow.
