Brief Description:  New Aileron Hinges

From the pictures you can now see that the new spar gives more than enough clearance for 20 degrees up and down aileron. In fact I'm getting 30 degrees up and 25 degrees down which will mean smooth bind-free movement. It was now time to make it even better. Inspecting the previous builders rivet work I decided the job of new hinges was definitely going to happen. Also, they moved fine but one of them was a little sideways which meant sticking out into the airstream. SO combine reliable construction, smooth movement, and flush hinges and it meant starting over. No big deal, I cut the hinges to length per plans, but I didn't cut the two 6" hinges down like Rutan says in the plans. Instead I used half of a MS20001-5 and half of a MS20001-6 and put them together to make the same dimensions he gave. I don't know why Rutan didn't suggest this as it is cleaner and easier then cutting all that metal off. Anyways, I drilled out the heads on the old hinges, popped em off with a chisel, re-drilled the holes in different locations, brushed on a thin layer of epoxy and mated the new hinge to the aileron. This job is so straight forward and simple that I'd recommend it to ANYONE that is having any hinge issues. Cake. All that is left now is to drill and attach nutplates the other side of the hinge and bolt em up for a now, Perfect aileron install!

Note: It didn't take any time at all to get all the hinges completely straight and flush. No excuse for sloppy hinges in my book.
