Brief Description:  Taking the induction plunge

Some will argue that running an engine without an air filter will drastically shorten its lifespan. Well, I'd agree if the engine is run on a dirt road during a dust storm. In aviation, 95% of an airplanes life is spent thousands of feet above the dirt roads in clean air. I've even seen induction boxes made to bypass the air filter in flight for more horsepower, and that's exactly what I'm craving :)
In order to make a final decision on my induction drama, I wanted to make sure to have a few things. 1. Clean and smooth inside bends for any ducting. NO hose would be ideal. 2. any bends would be less than 45 degree angles per the engine manual. 3. The length of ducting would be short and only take in fresh outside air. And 4. I would see gains in MP using Ram air in flight.
Now designing a system to convert the air to high pressure air was just simply out of the question, due to the fact that it would require either negating the first 3 requirements or major canopy surgury. Both were too risky so I opted out. Instead I'm going with a direct 2" duct right to the TB from a cresent shaped scoop that will be located about 1" above the tank vents. This way, any fuel coming from the vents will now go into the TB rather than all over my airplane in flight. It also will be designed to avoid the boundry layer as well as water ingestion on the ground. The cresent shape will look awesome and provide a low profile direct ram air solution to this issue.
Today, I started by cutting a Vans 2" naca in half and glassing it to the top of the cowling. After cure, I'll Micro the transition smooth and begin working on the scoop. This will be cool...no pun :)
Note: there may be enough room under the scoop to build a filter Box...more on this later
