As I spent a few hours cleaning up the shop today, the airplane got to sit outside in the direct High UV sunlight for a good 2 plus hours. I thought, "what a great time for post cure." and it was! BUT.... even though Rutan recommended a post cure similar to mine, and my surface temp was a PERFECT 158 for that post cure, some bad things started happening.
About the time I finished cleaning up, I went outside to start pulling the bird back in and I noticed a couple Delams in various places where I knew the glass was thin due to contouring heavily. Not a big deal as I can fix them up real easy. So I pull the airplane back in the garage and let it cool down. While I was wiping it down and cleaning it up for family coming over I saw MASSIVE waves on top of the strake following the spar cap. This is also right where I added X-30 Foam to bring everything flush with the wings. HOLY CRAP, what does this mean?? Could they be huge delams? I ran a delam check but the areas were solid, just wavy. My only assumption at this point is that the x-30 expanded in the heat of the surface, pushing the glass out. CRAP. This means 1 or God forbid 2 things. 1. I obviously have to block sand this areas to reveal what's going on under the primer, but if there isn't enough filler built up, then I'll be sanding into fiberglass which means re-doing glass work. My gosh, I just spent 4 hours cleaning up the shop from all the dirt and I'm now about to make a lot more. Well, It's better that this happened now than later. I'll have to see if X-30 was the culprit, and if so, will the problem continue to get worse or is it finished expanding???
Time to call Val and Robert harris.
