Once again, Rustoleum might label their can/container "Black Hammered" but testing is proving some pretty extreme differences. The test tonight was to see if their "brush on" can of black would match the Universal Spray can of Black and unless the 2 change color overnight, then they are VERY different. I primed both popsicle sticks with flat black primer to give consistant results, however, the Universal is , so far, much blacker then the can. In fact, the Can could almost be called hammered charcoal it's so much lighter. The main purpose here was to see if my "touch up" work could be applied with a brush, rather than having to tape off an entire area just to fix a scratch or something but by morning we will see if that's going to happen or not. I'm pretty sure, that my number 1 choice will be the Universal Black spray can due to it's uniform color and darkest sheen. not a big deal, but brushing could have saved a lot of time in repairs. Still better than a 2 part system for sure!
Moving on, I also wanted to test my Exterior super high tech black paint for heat buildup. The Akzo Nobel 4200SHR (Solar Heat Reflective) paint so far has shown stunning results when put out in the Sun compared to regular black paint. I've seen lower temps by 25 degrees already, but the real test will come when it's 90 degrees outside with high UV exposure. Flesh starts to burn after 140 degrees F, but the main concern of mine is exceeding the TG of the EZ Poxy which after post cure will be 196 degrees. God knows if the paint goes over 170 I won't even want to touch the airplane so I'll be looking for a tolerable medium. Todays test was to mask off half of the sample and spray a Satin clear over it and see if the clear changes it's ability to reflect heat or not. Ideally I want a satin finish instead of glossy. However, until temps heat up to 90, the jury will be out on this one. :) Stay tuned!
